The "Trout"
Sunday, January 31, 2010 at 3pm

Rossini - Duetto for cello and double bass
Martin - Ballade for flute and piano
Martinu - Duo No. 1 for violin and cello
Schubert - The "Trout" Quintet for piano and strings

Desirée Ruhstrat, violin
Roger Chase, viola
Steven Honigberg, cello
Michael Hovnanian, double bass
Carol Honigberg, piano
Anita Rieder, flute

The celebrated "Trout" Quintet by Franz Schubert is featured on our January program.  Written for friends during the summer of 1819 when Schubert was just 22 years old, it is scored for the unusual combination of violin, viola, cello, double bass and piano. Three fascinating Duos make up the first half of this program: Rossini's humorously operatic Duetto for Cello and Double Bass, written and performed in 1824 but not published until 1969; Frank Martin's soaring Ballade for Flute and Piano from 1939; and Martinu's virtuosic Duo No. 1 for Violin and Cello written in 1927.
